What can replace education

Education was pushed back due to various things in the past. Leading reason was money until recently. After looking at the photo published in dinamalar on 5th Jan'10, seems like the competition has increased.

Honda Civic Transmission problem

Honda is considered to be the most reliable cars in the US. Infact I firmly believed that until I stumbled on one of the most expensive problems. My transmission failed at 85000 miles - hardly any miles considering Honda's reliability. Called up Americas Honda and spoke to Lisa with absolutely no luck. Infact I was blamed for not extending warranty. Why on earth would I buy a warranty that early ? Are they labeling that their car isnt reliable atleast until 100000 miles? Anyway went to the dealer where I had been servicing - Crown honda at south point in durham. Came up with an estimate of $2600. Now I take it back to Lisa and she was saying its all left to the dealer - they have the right to waive the cost or charge me 1000's of $$ as they wish. I paraded some of the honda owners to the dealership and finally they came down to replacing the part at just the labor cost.
Now, I went into the www.nhtsa.com website and started compiling the VIN numbers that had the same problem. I found a substantial number of civics having this problem. My guess is the other 2001 civic owners didnt know that such a forum exists or they havent crossed the 90000 miles their car yet (to get into the transmission problem). My advice to all the unfortunate owners:
1) sell the car if you can when the condition is good.
2) bargain with america honda / dealer for fixing it free - its no fault of ours. Infact we shouldnt even pay for the labor and they should be paying us for the rental during that period.
3) If there is anyone out there for a class action suit, let me know. I will participate.

Its just their attitude on not fixing the CIVIC TRANSMISSION thats upsetting me than the cost.

Resources:
1) My own experience.
2) www.nhtsa.com - search the complaints database. I guess they are waiting for someone to die - to initiate an investigation - shame.
3) http://www.hondaproblems.com/Civic/transmission-failure.shtml
4) http://www.carcomplaints.com/Honda/Civic/2001/transmission/transmission_failure.shtml

Would I buy a honda again --- NO . Not because my transmission failed.. but because they made me beg for the replacement. Sorry - I still have some esteem left after begging for the first one.

Chakde India

Recently a flyover collapsed in Hyderabad killing a couple of people. The Government ordered a probe as usual.
To my knowledge, this is the first time the committee has come out so quickly with the results. They have found the companies guilty.

Why H'Bad flyover collapsed

Now whats left is to see if this verdict holds good and if the responsible parties will be punished accordingly. The very fact that a verdict came out this fast shows we are going in the right direction :)

End of an excellent presidency

After 5 years at the nation's highest office - Presidency , Dr Abdul Kalam took to teaching at Anna University.
Yes . He was people's President. A person who attracted press coverage for what he did rather than what he said.
Many people fail to convert their popularity to do good for people. Its very important for celebrities to do this when they are at the helm of the career. Not after it ends.
Here I am proudly presenting the example set by Dr Kalam.

He is using every instrument possible to let students know how to help the country to become a developed one.
Some salient news which attracted me recently :

Kalam at Gandhigram Univ where he says to the students :
  • We must be responsible. We must educate five illiterates, plant and nurture five trees, change five addicts from smoking, drugs, gambling and every other vice. We must abolish poverty at all costs.
  • If you think your parents are corrupt tell them to stop
Until this morning, I was thinking that the Afzal's case - the terrorist who was convicted on the parliament attack case was pending with the President's office.
I dont want to take sides here. But want my bloggers to be aware of the fact after reading this article in www.rediff.com
I did not receive papers on Afzal's mercy plea: Kalam

What a shame .. the Government has been hoodwinking a billion people. No matter what the Government's position is : come out and say it... and LOUD.
To not comment on something this important shows the indecisive attitude on everyone we elected.
Please for a billion people's sake, change this attitude and become a functioning Government.

And by the way, on the Bihar topic, when a state in his country is getting worse, whats the owner - the president doing in Russia. I wish he had come in person and dealt with it.
Dr Kalam, I beg to differ here ... you should have taken the owner ship and dealt with it. Merely saying you spoke to the prime minister and took the decision goes against your nature.

Hospitals in Emergency

Recently there was an article on CNN about choosing the right hospital during emergency.
It talks about a potential person who has high risk of heart attacks and other such anticipated emergencies can pick his emergency hospital which could save his life.
Choosing the hospital matters because of the procedure each and every hospital has.

Picking right hospital can save your life

You can check about the hospital procedures in the following website :

Saravana stores Goons

Recently an NRI from London was attacked for "stealing" a Rs 10 ball though he had bought it in the same shop.

Six Saravana Store Workers( goons) attacked a NRI Gentleman, who came shopping to Chennai. Elanchezian, a visiting NRI from London, was shopping in Saravana Stores, Ranganathan Street along with his wife Mrs. Sudharshini and little daughter Nilayini, 3 yrs of age. Day before yesterday, he shopped in Saravana Stores for Rs.10,000. After having paid for the items, Elanchezian tried to carry his daughter outside the store. His daughter was carrying a small rubber ball worth Rs.10 and the store workers thought she had stolen it.

Elanchezian tried to explain that he had bought the rubber ball but the 6 store workers attacked him, and injured Elanchezian. The public tried to help Elanchezian but the store workers prevented them from doing so. Finally, Elanchezian called up the Mambalam Police Station and explained the situation but the police were reluctant to file a case. When Lathika Charan, Commissioner of Police came to know about this, she ordered immediate action on the six accused.

The Six workers were later taken to Saidapet Magistrate and released on bail.

Now my point on this issue is , the management knew this was wrong. So they should have apologized to the concerned person. They never did that. Instead, once again took the arrogant path using their money and power in chennai.

Mr Elanchezian , we people are with you. Go ahead, fight it . I will try to blog this incident in more places. DO NOT get into any compromise till justice is done.

This should be a lesson to every big wig owner who thinks they are superior than the customers.
Ofcourse other shops might also be doing the same thing. For them , the message is "time is not too far when you also get caught with evidence" .

I WILL NOT SHOP IN SARAVANA STORES. Even if it means I spend few thousands more at other shops.

Condolences

While I mourn for the victims of the Brazilian air crash , I do mourn for the fall of justice.
All the time in my life I have been thinking JUSTICE is blind - doesn't differentiate between poor and rich, power and meek . It was shocking when I read the following in the news column

"A Brazilian court in February banned large jets at the busy airport because of safety concerns, The Associated Press reported.

But an appeals court overruled the ban, saying it would hurt business and that the safety problems did not warrant halting air traffic, according to AP."

Had the greedy, money hungry attorneys for the airlines not taken the case to the appeals court, the innocent lives would not have been taken. If a lower court had ruled in a way, there is a reason - only if the appeals court had thought about this in detail :(
Around 175 are dead and millions live to mourn them with heavy heart, am with you folks.

Shame on politicians

How far Indian Govt goes to fetch foreign investment

Govvernment tries to get Dow chemicals to invest in India

For the novice, Dow chemicals bought Union carbide -the infamous company which put people's life after their profits. Along with it comes all the law suits.

Apparently the Indian Government including the PMO , finance and industry ministry are working hard to let this go away - meaning finding loop holes, and get Dow Chemicals to invest back to India.

Dow chemicals knew all the risks that came with their take over. When will our people support our own ? The greed makes me sick to the stomach . STOP.

Welcome

What a way to welcome people

In this scenario when IT employees are jumping jobs, look at this grand welcome

Folks get me a job with this company :)

At this rate, defenitely job retension is not a problem ....

Tax filing and Assessment

After politicians, now its the turn of the APEX court to help the stinking rich folks.
Apparently they say "oversight" while filing tax is not a punishable crime.
Every person who gets audited by Income tax office is rich enough and does hire a reputed Chartered Accountant to file his taxes ( Am not saying the medium income group doesnt get audited .. just that its so rare and we can comfortably neglect them) . These so called CAs work hard to hide the income of their paymasters.
The only thing which was making them to be honest was a punitive action by the Government and now, the APEX ruling has quashed that too.

Apex ruling

Lets wait and see how much this affects the tax revenues for the Government

Medical Profession

At a time when doctors are minting money and health becoming a booming "economy", insurance hitting a high , here is a two rupees doctor.

This person charges a couple of bucks for consultation.

How many of us dare to follow his footsteps. We can prove one to be in our own field of expertise.

Amitabh - Bollywood Cinema actor - A Farmer

Cant believe Amitabh bought a land claiming he is a farmer.
Ofcourse there is some political vendetta behind this . But undoubtedly, what Amithabh did was ethically and morally WRONG.
If a land is allotted for farming purpose, there is a reason. The politicians and rich people circumvent the law at every turning to make them richer and richer. Where does this greed stop ?
At their funeral ? Apparently no... They pass it on to their family successors. Some times, I do feel China is on the right path.

Amitabh Bachchan is not a farmer: UP court

A funny and sorry story on how he went on to grab more land in other places based on how he claimed as a farmer in one place.

Scary Rupee appreciation

The Rupee versus dollar has been going on for some time and it creating records day by day. The exchange rate has affected almost every international company in India now. So much so that companies like Wipro, Infosys and TCS with their maximum revenues from foreign countries are considering renegotiating the prices of their services. How long would this last . If the stalwarts start pressurizing folks around, it should come under control soon. Hope !!!

Presidential election

After having an educated president, think we are heading towards someone of lesser caliber soon.

when other countries are going up, we still dont even know if which direction we want to go . Shame on the politicians.

Ofcourse one surprising twist on the UP election was Mayawati accepting the fact that she needs all votes across the castes. A realization that carries messages to all parties .

Realising the dream

Pretty impressive article.
I dont believe on the economy will triple.. a safer bet would be double...

http://in.rediff.com/money/2007/may/18inter1.htm

India's growth has been enormous and steady over a period of time.
Take it any field in the society

IT which leads it
Communications
Automotive
Bio-technology

Inspite of all this growth, the only thing that worries me is the lower middle class who still make a couple of grand a month.
So all the growth is for probably 40% of the population.
The remaining 60% are brought down heavily. Classic example is an acountant's job thats being replaced by computers. ( the computer programmer ofcourse would have made 10 times more here)

Dayanidhi Maran, a very high profile union minister for IT and telocom has resigned from the cabinet. And its a bad news to Chennai and also entire TN state. He was atleast doing some good things to the state. Now due to dirty politics and jealous of few selfished politians, he has to step down from the post.

Law on property damage during political agitations

Am not for or against any political party in TamilNadu . In general I believe a political post comes with its own pros and cons. Wont let a person to be honest to himself .. let alone the people who voted him for. Following link is so disturbing atleast from the common man's perspective.
http://www.chennaionline.com/colnews/newsitem.asp?NEWSID=%7B415ED69B-2359-415C-8AF7-A041854891D3%7D&CATEGORYNAME=CHN

Here is the content :

Law on property damage during agitations

Chennai, May 4: The state government today introduced an amendment to the Tamil Nadu Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act, 1992, as per which political parties need not pay for damage to property during agitations and processions.

The amendment, introduced by PWD Minister K Duraimurugan, said political parties or communal, language or ethnic groups, need not pay compensation for damage or loss caused to property during any procession, assembly, meeting, agitation, demonstration or any other activities organised by them.

The Tamil Nadu Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act, 1992, provides for punishment to political parties for damage to property during agitations and processions organised by them.

Assuming we find the person who did damage my property... taking action on him is not going to help. He will be out the next minute with all the political influence for the next galatta.

From the spirit

We all think, talk within ourselves. We see something, mind springs forward with so many thoughts . Do we convey all those to others ? Yes. May be few times. Infact sometimes, we dont even get a chance to share it with others. This forum is for sharing those kind of thoughts.
